photos from Gratuitous Umlaut opening night (Seattle)

here are shots of Punch Gallery during the opening for Gratuitous Umlaut. for some reason they hung my work really high. i'm not bothered by it; just curious.

a random assortment

a random assortment:

1. matt pazzol has new work on his site, and even though some of it is unlike his usual style, it still makes a lot of sense to me. i am dead set on buying or trading for one of these two pieces:

if you like them and want to see more, check out his flickr site here. it has images of plenty more work he has made throughout the years.

2. i am taking a class / lecture series at the Figge, and it's excellent. the speaker is Kate Elliott from the university of iowa, and she's good at what she does. i've learned some things i was never taught during my many art history hours from my formal schooling — much more about The Eight and the Ashcan school, and stories about Clement Greenberg, just to name a few. the only problem with the class is having to deal with a certain other student who is horribly obnoxious, ego-tripping, loves to hear himself talk, and who openly calls others "ignorant" despite showing strong traits of that characteristic himself. at last night's session, i actually verbally spoke the words "shut up" to him as he talked over kate. yes, it's actually that maddening sometimes. when the class is over and done with, i might post some thoughts on the more interesting things i learned.

3. i'm completely beside myself as to how difficult it is to balance my life as a parent / husband / 40hr week worker with my life as an artist. i still haven't finished the paintings i said would be done months ago. however, there are new images to share. some look awful at the state they're in, but i'm dead set on spending more time downstairs now. almost done. i swear. here you go:

4. Nowhere Close to Normal is finished traveling. sometime soon i might have some new images from it's road trip, taken from the Hays, Kansas venue.

5. a traveling contemporary drawing exhibition that has been organized by the walker art center is headed this way, to the figge. julie mehretu has work in the show, and she's one of my favorite artists, so i'm excited. here's one of her drawing/paintings:

mid-break...

...taking a short break from the studio for a while. the meeting between my artist-friends and i (now a couple weeks back) went extremely well. i think my mind is set on what i'll have on the walls for my solo show this summer.

next week i'm hitting the studio hard to finish some of the work up. check back later for pics of a finished painting and some new drawings/woodcuts.

for now, peep this:
